According to tech analyst Gartner, we’re facing a classic Garbage In/Garbage Out (GIGO) problem at AI scale, where unverified AI-generated content is flooding systems and poisoning the very models meant to drive business innovation.

This phenomenon, known as “model collapse,” occurs when AI large language models (LLMs) learn from other AI-generated content rather than verified human data. The result? Systems drift further from reality with each iteration. Gartner predicts that 50% of organizations will adopt a zero-trust posture for data governance by 2028, not because they want to, but because they’ll have no choice. The proliferation of AI-generated data across corporate systems means businesses can no longer assume data is human-generated or trustworthy by default.
“Just having the data is not enough,” warns IBM distinguished engineer Phaedra Boinodiris. “Understanding the context and the relationships of the data is key. This is why you need to have an interdisciplinary approach to who gets to decide what data is correct.”
Academic Research Shows the Problem’s Reach
The issue isn’t confined to corporate systems. Recent analysis of academic papers reveals how deeply AI-generated inaccuracies have penetrated even expert circles. AI detection startup GPTZero scanned 4,841 papers accepted by the prestigious NeurIPS conference and found 100 hallucinated citations across 51 papers. While statistically small at about 1.1% of papers, these findings highlight a troubling trend: even AI experts are falling victim to the very problems they study.
NeurIPS acknowledges the issue but notes that incorrect references don’t necessarily invalidate the research. However, for businesses relying on AI for critical decisions, this margin of error could translate to millions in losses or regulatory violations.
Technical Solutions and Industry Responses
As the problem gains recognition, the industry is responding with both technical innovations and practical solutions. Logical Intelligence, a Silicon Valley startup that recently appointed AI pioneer Yann LeCun to its board, has unveiled Kona – an “energy-based” reasoning model that claims to outperform traditional LLMs in accuracy and efficiency.
“Logical Intelligence is the first company to move EBM-based reasoning from a research concept to products, enabling a new breed of more reliable AI systems,” says LeCun. Unlike LLMs that generate text probabilistically, energy-based models use fixed parameters and grade answers based on energy usage, potentially reducing hallucinations and improving reliability.
Meanwhile, established players like IBM are addressing the practical challenges of implementing reliable AI at scale. The company has launched IBM Enterprise Advantage, a combined AI platform and consulting service designed to help enterprises scale AI initiatives without overhauling existing systems. Built on IBM’s internal AI systems, it provides pre-built agentic applications and deployment across major cloud providers.
The Regulatory Landscape Intensifies
As technical solutions emerge, regulatory frameworks are also taking shape. South Korea has introduced landmark legislation to regulate artificial intelligence, becoming one of the first major economies to implement comprehensive AI laws. The regulations include requirements for AI system audits, risk assessments, and transparency in automated decision-making processes.
While startups have raised concerns about compliance burdens potentially stifling innovation, these developments signal a growing recognition that AI governance isn’t optional – it’s essential for sustainable deployment.
Practical Steps for Business Leaders
Gartner suggests several concrete steps organizations can take to combat model collapse. First, appoint an AI governance leader responsible for zero-trust policies and AI risk management. This individual must work closely with data and analytics teams to ensure systems can handle AI-generated content.
Second, foster cross-functional collaboration that includes security, data, analytics, and any department using AI. Only users can tell you what they really need from AI, and this team’s job is to identify and address AI-generated business risks.
Third, leverage existing governance policies rather than reinventing the wheel. Build on current data and analytics frameworks and update security, metadata management, and ethics-related policies to address AI-generated data risks.
Finally, adopt active metadata practices that enable real-time alerts when data is stale or requires recertification. As one example shows, asking several AI chatbots about the default scheduler in Linux today yields outdated information – a problem that could cascade through automated workflows with serious consequences.
The Human Element Remains Critical
Despite technological advances, the human element remains crucial. “Those often-experimental approaches rarely translate into enterprise-grade outcomes on their own,” notes Saurabh Gupta, president of research and advisory services at HFS Research. This underscores that successful AI implementation requires more than just technology – it demands skilled professionals who understand both the tools and the business context.
Will AI still be useful in 2028? Absolutely. But ensuring it’s useful and not heading down a primrose path to bad answers will require dedicated effort across organizations. The companies that succeed will be those that recognize AI isn’t just about algorithms – it’s about building systems resilient enough to withstand their own success.
