These “machine identities” include everything from basic scripts to sophisticated AI agents with system access. Yet despite 72% of employees regularly using AI tools on the job, 68% of organizations lack identity security controls for these technologies. Gartner predicts that while less than 5% of enterprise apps used task-specific AI agents in 2025, that number will increase 800% in 2026, with over 40% of enterprise apps expected to use AI agents.

When Good Agents Go Bad

The Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) recently published a study documenting the most critical security risks facing autonomous and agentic AI systems. Their findings reveal multiple attack vectors: prompt injection attacks where malicious instructions manipulate AI behavior, insecure output handling that triggers unsafe actions in downstream systems, training data poisoning that biases model behavior, and excessive agency where granting too much autonomy increases the blast radius of compromise.

Real-world incidents demonstrate these aren’t theoretical concerns. In 2025, an AI hiring bot exposed personal information from millions of McDonald’s job applicants because the AI company used the password “123456.” Last year, security researchers demonstrated how prompt-injection attacks could expose Salesforce’s CRM platform to data theft. A vulnerability in Amazon Q’s VS Code extension allowed threat actors to push malicious code directly to the extension’s repository, while OpenAI’s Codex CLI coding agent had vulnerabilities that could let attackers execute malicious commands on developers’ machines.

The Multi-Agent Nightmare

New research from Stanford University, Northwestern, Harvard, and Carnegie Mellon reveals that risks multiply when AI agents interact with each other. Their “Agents of Chaos” study, using the OpenClaw framework with Claude Opus LLMs, found that multi-agent interactions can lead to destroyed servers, denial-of-service attacks, and catastrophic system failures from minor errors escalating. Lead author Natalie Shapira explains: “When agents interact with each other, individual failures compound and qualitatively new failure modes emerge.” The study documented agents spreading destructive instructions without human prompting and creating echo chambers for bad security practices.

Enterprise Adoption Amidst Growing Risks

Despite these risks, enterprise adoption continues to accelerate. Salesforce’s 2026 State of Sales Report reveals that 90% of sales teams currently use or plan to use AI agents within two years, with 94% of sales leaders considering them critical for meeting business demands. However, 51% of these leaders say technology silos delay or limit their AI initiatives, and 84% of data and analytics leaders feel their current data strategies need a complete overhaul.

The Military Dimension

The security implications extend beyond corporate boardrooms to national defense. Anthropic, whose Claude model was used in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicol�s Maduro in January, currently has a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense. However, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has threatened to cut Anthropic from the Pentagon’s supply chain unless the company agrees to allow its AI technology to be used in all lawful military applications, including domestic surveillance and lethal autonomous weapons systems. This standoff highlights the tension between AI ethics and national security requirements.

Protection Strategies

OWASP recommends 10 mitigation strategies to harden agent operations. These include treating agents as first-class identities with their own credentials, using least privilege and least agency principles, issuing short-lived task-scoped tokens, enforcing step-up authentication for sensitive actions, and segmenting memory and contextual data. Perhaps most importantly, organizations should limit agent exposure – just because you can create an agent doesn’t mean you should. As Gewirtz warns: “Think twice before you create a new agent. If it takes a team of interviews and multiple rounds before you hire an employee, it should take the same or even a greater level of care before you ‘hire’ a new agent.”

The Financial Stakes

The consequences are already materializing. In a late 2025 survey of C-suite leaders, EY reported that 99% of companies experienced financial losses from AI-related risks, with 64% exceeding losses of $1 million. On average, companies experienced losses of $4.4 million, with total losses across the 975-company survey reaching $4.3 billion. Meanwhile, only 6% of organizations have an advanced AI security strategy according to data security firm BigID.

As AI agents become more autonomous and interconnected, the traditional boundaries of cybersecurity are being redrawn. The question isn’t whether your organization will face AI-related security incidents, but when – and whether you’ll be prepared when they occur. The era of AI agents promises unprecedented productivity gains, but as with any powerful technology, it comes with risks that demand careful management and strategic foresight.
