While companies tout privacy tools and regulations multiply, we’re actually losing ground in the battle to protect our personal data.
The Illusion of Control
“We have more privacy controls yet less privacy than ever,” cybersecurity expert Prof Alan Woodward tells the BBC. This paradox defines our current moment: despite thousands of privacy tools, encrypted apps, and regulatory frameworks, over 1.35 billion people were affected by data breaches in 2024 alone. AI’s New Privacy Threats
The privacy landscape is shifting dramatically with AI advancements. Research published in 2026 reveals that large language models (LLMs) can deanonymize pseudonymous users with alarming precision – up to 68% recall and 90% accuracy. “What we found is that these AI agents can do something that was previously very difficult,” explains co-author Simon Lermen. “Starting from free text like an anonymized interview transcript, they can work their way to the full identity of a person.”
This capability goes beyond academic curiosity. With just 10+ shared movies on Reddit, identification rates reach 48.1% at 90% precision. As AI systems improve, they’ll likely become even better at connecting digital breadcrumbs to real identities, raising concerns about doxxing, stalking, and hyper-targeted surveillance.
Corporate Practices vs. Privacy Promises
While tech companies market privacy features, their practices often tell a different story. Meta’s smart glasses, for instance, send video recordings to clickworkers in Kenya for AI training – including intimate content like sex videos and bathroom recordings, according to investigative reports. Workers face psychological stress while being paid very little, and users cannot disable this data sharing.
Meanwhile, enterprise AI introduces new risks. Machine identities now outnumber human identities 82 to 1 in corporate environments, and 72% of employees use AI tools without proper security controls. “The AI agent itself [is] becoming the new insider threat,” warns Palo Alto Networks chief security intel officer Wendi Whitmore. With approximately 250,000 current users, this partnership represents a market shift toward privacy as a premium feature rather than an afterthought.
Yet even hardware solutions face challenges. Privacy gadgets like HDMI-CEC blockers and USB data blockers offer physical protection, but they’re niche products in a market dominated by convenience-first devices. The fundamental tension remains: companies profit from data collection while consumers struggle to understand, let alone control, how their information flows through digital ecosystems.
Beyond Individual Responsibility
Dr Carissa Veliz, author of Privacy is Power, argues that expecting individuals to solve privacy problems is unrealistic. “Mostly, people don’t feel like they have control,” she says. “It’s partly because we are being surveyed in ways that are beyond our control, and also partly because tech companies have an interest in selling us this narrative that it’s too late.”
Veliz advocates for a “multi-pronged approach” combining regulatory action, corporate responsibility, and consumer choice. She communicates via Signal, a secure messaging app with 70 million monthly users compared to WhatsApp’s 3 billion – a choice that reflects both technical preference and cultural values about data protection.
The Future of Digital Autonomy
As AI capabilities expand, the privacy conversation must evolve beyond cookie consent and password managers. The real question isn’t whether we can create more privacy controls, but whether we can build systems that respect human autonomy by design. When people assume they’re constantly tracked, they self-censor – not just in nightclubs where influencers avoid dancing for fear of being filmed, but in their political opinions, creative expressions, and personal explorations.
Woodward frames privacy as essential for democracy: “People should care about online privacy because it shapes who has power over their lives… It’s about having something to protect: freedom of thought, experimentation, dissent and personal development without permanent surveillance.” In the AI era, protecting these freedoms requires recognizing that privacy isn’t just about hiding information – it’s about maintaining the space for human complexity in an increasingly quantified world.
