The numbers tell a compelling story – 76% of Americans say they trust AI rarely or only sometimes, even as usage rates surge across professional and personal contexts.

The Trust Gap Widens

According to the Quinnipiac survey of nearly 1,400 Americans, only 21% trust AI-generated information most or almost all of the time. This skepticism persists despite 51% using AI for research, with significant percentages also leveraging it for writing, work projects, and data analysis. “Americans are clearly adopting AI, but they are doing so with deep hesitation, not deep trust,” notes Chetan Jaiswal, a computer science professor at Quinnipiac. The emotional landscape is equally telling: just 6% report being “very excited” about AI, while 62% express little to no excitement. Concern runs high at 80%, with Millennials and Baby Boomers leading the worry parade.

Job Market Jitters and Economic Realities

The labor market anxiety is particularly acute. Seventy percent believe AI advancements will reduce job opportunities, a significant jump from 56% last year. Gen Z emerges as the most pessimistic demographic, with 81% foreseeing decreased employment prospects. These concerns aren’t unfounded – entry-level job postings in the U.S. have dropped 35% since 2023, and AI leaders like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have warned about job displacement. Yet, there’s a curious disconnect: only 30% of employed Americans fear AI will make their own jobs obsolete. “People seem more willing to predict a tougher market than to picture themselves on the losing end of that disruption,” observes Tamilla Triantoro, a professor at Quinnipiac.

But is this pessimism warranted? Not according to Stanford University professor Erik Brynjolfsson, who argues in a ZDNET interview that the “job apocalypse” narrative is overblown. “The real value is defining the right questions,” Brynjolfsson explains. “Understanding the problems that need to be solved, defining them in a way that really are useful to people. So those who can identify those opportunities are going to be more valuable than ever before.” He points to historical precedents where technologies like fourth-generation languages and cloud services actually accelerated demand for programmers in new areas. Brynjolfsson predicts AI will expand the software profession dramatically: “A tiny fraction of people do coding and software development. Two-thirds of Americans say businesses aren’t doing enough to be transparent about their AI use, and the same percentage believes government regulation is insufficient. This sentiment arrives as the UK’s Financial Reporting Council (FRC) issues the world’s first guidance on AI use in auditing, with a clear message: “You can’t blame it on the box. If you use this technology, you are still accountable for it,” states Mark Babington, executive director of regulatory standards at the FRC. Major audit firms like KPMG, PwC, Deloitte, and EY are investing billions in AI, but the guidance emphasizes human oversight and safe system design as non-negotiables.

Infrastructure Challenges and Innovative Solutions

Infrastructure concerns also fuel public skepticism. Sixty-five percent of Americans oppose building AI data centers in their communities, citing high electricity costs and water use. Yet, innovative solutions are emerging from unexpected quarters. Venture capitalists are pouring hundreds of millions into AI satellite startups like Starcloud and Aetherflux, which plan to launch AI data centers into space. “By moving AI compute to space, we unlock access to unlimited solar power and completely remove the energy bottleneck,” explains Philip Johnston, Starcloud’s co-founder and CEO. The company recently raised $170 million at a $1.1 billion valuation, with SpaceX and Blue Origin applying to launch thousands of AI satellites. Nvidia has even introduced AI chips designed for space use, though CEO Jensen Huang acknowledges technical challenges: “The challenge of course is cooling – you can’t take advantage of conduction or convection.”

The European Alternative

Meanwhile, European initiatives offer another perspective on AI infrastructure. French AI startup Mistral has raised $830 million in debt financing to build Nvidia-powered data centers across Europe, aiming to provide sovereign AI alternatives to US tech giants. “Scaling our infrastructure in Europe is critical to empower our customers and to ensure AI innovation and autonomy remain at the heart of Europe,” says CEO Arthur Mensch. The company plans to reach 200MW of AI computing capacity by 2027, driven by European demand for customized AI environments amid geopolitical concerns.

So what does this trust paradox mean for businesses and professionals? First, transparency isn’t optional – it’s essential for adoption. Companies that clearly communicate how they use AI, what safeguards are in place, and how human oversight functions will build trust more effectively. Second, the job market transformation requires proactive adaptation rather than passive anxiety. As Brynjolfsson notes, “In some cases, it does replace what they’re doing. But at the same time, it helps people be twice or even 10 times more productive.” Third, infrastructure innovation – whether in space or through sovereign European initiatives – suggests that current environmental concerns might be addressed through technological creativity rather than opposition.

The Quinnipiac poll captures a moment of transition: Americans are using AI because it works, but they’re wary because they don’t fully understand it. The path forward requires balancing innovation with accountability, productivity with transparency, and technological advancement with human oversight. As Triantoro concludes: “Americans are not rejecting AI outright, but they are sending a warning.
